about sara
Sara’s passion for her work as a physical therapist began with her understanding of movement from an early age, when she was surrounded by dance, fitness, yoga and other forms of therapeutic movement. Helping others move well in life while discovering one’s capacity for recovering and developing higher levels of function gives her great satisfaction.
Sara has practiced as a licensed physical therapist for over 20 years in Florida, New York City and New Jersey, during which time she specialized in orthopedics, pelvic health for women and men, obstetrics, and vestibular rehabilitation. The highlight of her years of extensive continuing education has been her training and certification in Functional Manual Therapy (FMT) through the Institute of Physical Art. FMT training gave her a framework to evaluate and promote efficient function as well as refined manual evaluation tools which diagnose and treat movement dysfunction as it occurs during movement with specificity. She became a Certified Yoga Instructor through Yoga Synthesis in order to freely integrate yoga into her repertoire of movement therapy.
In 2017, she opened her own practice, Sara Chan PT LLC, in Ridgewood, NJ, where she now resides with her husband and daughter. Her own experience through pregnancy and postpartum, yoga and dance, as well as her journey to optimize functioning in her own body has greatly enhanced her appreciation for what it takes to succeed in achieving one’s goals.

rates
initial session and rate
The first session is a one-on-one in-depth 90-minute evaluation. We will review your history, symptoms, goals and expectations, complete a physical examination and begin treatment. The rate for the initial session is $270.
each session and rate
Subsequent sessions are one-on-one 60-minutes of treatment. Each session has a focus on functional manual therapy. This literally means that the therapist is placing their hands on you with the objective of treating restricted or painful movement and facilitating strength and coordination. It includes treating adjacent areas that may be contributing to the restriction or pain. This is a more holistic approach to physical therapy. Exercises and lifestyle modifications are prescribed for at home treatment between sessions to maximize your office visit with the therapist. The rate for each session is $180.
in-network or out-of-network
We are an out-of-network practice, which is a good thing. It allows us to provide longer and focused one-on-one care during each session. A typical insurance has a co-pay of $30-60. It would take 4 sessions with $120-240 in co-pay to equal a one-hour, one-on-one session with a PT. There is value in out-of-pocket payment.
If your insurance company has out-of-network benefits, we will provide an itemized receipt (superbill) upon request for each session, which you may use to submit a claim to offset the expense. Please familiarize yourself with your physical therapy benefits based on your plan, including whether pre-authorization or a doctor’s referral are required.
Flex Spending Accounts (FSA) may also be used to pay for treatment sessions or costs not reimbursed to further offset the expense.
Additionally, New Jersey allows Direct Access to physical therapy. This means that you can be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a referral from a doctor. However, rarely some insurance plans may require a referral from a Medical Doctor to reimburse for Physical Therapy services.
